CV personal statement: five lines of proof, then standard headings
A UK CV personal statement is five lines of proof for one vacancy, not a biography and not a UCAS essay. Put it in the body under your name, then keep a Skills heading Workday can map. Name the job, the years, and one result a hiring manager would repeat.

Key takeaways
- · Treat the personal statement as a targeted opener for one vacancy — five lines, not your life story and not a university essay.
- · Place name, city, phone, and email in the body. A statement in a text box still leaves Workday with an empty contact field.
- · Name the role, the years, the setting, and one proof point. Adjectives without a noun the posting uses will not help Greenhouse search.
- · Keep a separate Skills heading under the statement. Parsers map Skills; they do not treat a prose paragraph as a skill list.
- · Write the statement last. Draft experience first, then check the parse before you upload.
A personal statement is five lines for one vacancy
Key takeaway: If the opening could sit on any CV in your field, it is a biography. Hiring managers and parsers both need a targeted opener.
In the UK and in many EU processes, the short block under your name is called a personal statement, a personal profile, or a professional profile. It is not the UCAS personal statement you wrote at 17, and it is not a US “objective” about what you hope to gain. It is a briefing note: who you are in job-title language, where you have done the work, and why this vacancy is a fit.
Recruiters in Greenhouse still search nouns — band, caseload, SystmOne, SAP, Ofsted, Python — not “dynamic professional.” Workday stores what it can hang on fields. A 12-line life story eats the first screen and still leaves Skills empty. Five lines that a hiring manager could read aloud to a panel will beat a paragraph that sounds like a cover letter stuffed into the header.
Match the vacancy only when it is true. If the advert says “Band 6 Occupational Therapist (adult community)” and your last badge said “OT, community team,” you can write that pairing. You cannot invent a band, a clearance, or a teaching status you do not hold. The statement is the first place a panel will catch a stretch.
What this block is not
- Not a UCAS or postgraduate essay about childhood motivation.
- Not a list of soft skills with no setting (“excellent communicator, team player”).
- Not a keyword footer pasted as prose. Taleo and iCIMS will not score a paragraph of tools you never used.
- Not a substitute for how to write a CV on length, publications, or academic appendices.
If you are applying in the US, this same block is usually a professional summary. The writing method is identical: proof first, adjectives last. The label changes because US resumes are shorter and US Workday tenants rarely expect “Personal statement” as a heading. For UK two-page CVs, keep the UK name so local recruiters recognise the section — and still use Experience, Education, and Skills underneath so a global ATS can map the rest.
Put it in the body, then give Workday a Skills heading
Key takeaway: Pretty headers drop emails. A statement without a Skills block leaves the parser with a blob of prose and no mapped skills.
Workday, Greenhouse, and several NHS and university tenants extract text, then try to fill name, email, phone, employer, dates, and education. If your contact line lives in a header, footer, or text box, the extract can come back empty. The personal statement then becomes the first thing the parser “reads” — and it is the worst place to hide a phone number inside a sentence.
Use one column. Left-aligned. Name, city or region, phone, email, LinkedIn URL in ordinary body text. Then the personal statement as four or five short sentences, not a justified slab. Then a heading the ATS already knows: Skills, Key skills, or Technical skills. Put the nouns from the person specification there as a simple list. Do not rely on the statement alone to carry “Python, SQL, Tableau” in a clause the parser never tokenises as skills.
Length: about 50–80 words, or five lines at 11 pt on A4. If you need a sixth line, you are repeating a bullet that belongs under the first role. Two-page UK CVs still start with this short opener; they do not spend half a page on “who I am.” For the rest of the page architecture, use what to put on a resume and resume format — same parse rules, UK labels.
File habits that keep the statement intact
- Selectable text in .docx or a tagged PDF. A scan of a signed paper CV is a brick in Workday.
- No photo in the header unless the country and the employer clearly expect one. UK private-sector ATS pipelines usually do not.
- Dates on roles still need month and year beside the job, not only inside the statement (“since 2019” is not a Workday date field).
- If you also keep a US resume, do not paste a UK “Personal statement” heading into a one-page file aimed at a US Greenhouse board — use Summary, then the same proof.
Test the file the way the ATS will. Select-all in Preview or Word. If you cannot highlight the email, Greenhouse cannot store it. Then run the ATS checker. An ATS resume is not a US-only idea: UK CVs fail the same parse when contact sits in a letterhead graphic.
Rewrite weak openers: three before-and-after transforms
Key takeaway: A statement that could fit any vacancy is unfinished. Steal the pattern, not the facts.
Shortlisting panels skim. They look for a title they recognise, a setting, and one proof point. “Highly motivated professional” hides all three. Below are three rewrites we use in edits — NHS-adjacent, early career, and a career switcher. Copy the shape.
Before
I am a highly motivated healthcare professional seeking a challenging Band 6 role where I can grow and add value to your team.
After
Band 5 physiotherapist, 3 years MSK outpatients in an NHS trust. Caseload of 12–14 patients a day in SystmOne. Applying for your Band 6 MSK post; currently covering weekend fracture clinic.
Before
Recent graduate passionate about marketing and social media, looking to start my career in a fast-paced environment.
After
BA Marketing, 2025. Ran Instagram for a 12-person campus society (2,400 followers) and sent 8 campaign emails in Mailchimp. Seeking junior coordinator roles in B2B SaaS, not consumer fashion.
Before
Experienced manager with a proven track record of delivering results across multiple stakeholders and workstreams.
After
Operations lead, 8 years, last role a 22-person warehouse. Cut pick errors after mapping returns in the WMS the advert names. Open to operations manager posts in grocery logistics, not general “leadership.”
If you do not have a clean metric, use scope: caseload, class size, budget you could defend, shift pattern, languages. “Night-shift charge coverage for a 28-bed ward” is a number. “Excellent communicator” is not. Line-level proof still lives in resume bullet points; the statement should preview one of those lines, not invent a new biography.
Stop at five lines. If a sixth line is a second achievement, move it under the most relevant role. The statement’s job is to get the panel to the first job block, not to replace it.
A 12-step playbook you can finish from one job advert
Key takeaway: Write experience first. The statement is a summary of proof you already lined up, not a mood you hope to justify later.
Block 45 minutes with the person specification, your last CV, and a notes app. If you want a layout that already keeps contact in the body, start in the Enhance CV builder and paste facts as you go.
- Save the advert and the person specification. Circle the job title, the band or grade, five essential criteria, and any named systems.
- Create a new file. Put name, city/region, phone, email, and LinkedIn in the body — not in a header text box.
- Leave the statement blank. List roles in reverse chronology with month-year dates Workday can tokenise.
- Under the most relevant role, draft messy bullets of work you actually did. Do not polish yet.
- Delete bullets that do not help this vacancy. Move leftovers to a master file, not into the statement.
- Rewrite remaining bullets as verb + object + number or tool. That pile is your evidence.
- Only now write four or five lines: title as they would recognise it, years, setting, one proof, why this vacancy.
- Add a Skills heading. List nouns from the specification you can defend. No star ratings, no prose paragraph instead of a list.
- Education, memberships, and licences in their own blocks. Do not hide NMC, QTS, or security clearance only inside the statement.
- Read the statement out loud. If you wince at an adjective, cut it. If a line repeats a bullet word for word, shorten the statement.
- Export selectable text. Open on a phone. Confirm the email is tappable and the five lines still fit without wrapping into the first job heading.
- Paste CV and advert into the ATS checker. Fix missing contact or an unmapped Skills heading, then upload to Workday or Greenhouse.
People invert step 7. They write a poetic opener about being “results-oriented,” then wonder why the rest of the CV is thin. Proof first. The statement should sound like a hiring manager repeating you to another hiring manager.
If you stall, steal structure — not sentences — from professional summary examples. Do not paste someone else’s caseload or band. For the US-shaped version of the same choice, see resume objective vs summary.
Do this, skip that
Key takeaway: Most personal-statement advice optimises for sounding keen. Panels and parsers optimise for fields and proof.
Use this as a desk-side filter. If a choice is not in the table, ask: will Workday store it, and will a human still understand it at 7 a.m. on a phone?
Parser-friendly vs. parser-hostile choices for the opener
| Topic | Do | Don’t |
|---|---|---|
| Length | About five lines / 50–80 words aimed at this vacancy. | Half a page of biography, or one vague sentence that names no job. |
| Heading | Personal statement or Personal profile — then Skills as its own heading. | “About me,” icons, or a statement that tries to be the skills list. |
| Proof | Title, setting, one number or named system from the advert. | “Passionate,” “dynamic,” or every essential criterion crammed into one clause. |
| Contact | Phone and email in body text above the statement. | Contact only in header, footer, or inside the opening sentence. |
| Honesty | Band, clearance, and right-to-work only if true. | Inflating a title the panel will check against ESR or LinkedIn. |
| File | Selectable .docx or PDF named FirstLast_Role.pdf. | A scanned signed CV, or PersonalStatementFINAL3.pdf. |
Functional CVs that hide dates still show up in career-change advice. Greenhouse can parse them; humans distrust them. If you are changing fields, keep chronology and let the statement explain the pivot in one sentence — details in career change resume. Do not make the reader reconstruct when you worked.
Edge cases: academic CVs, first jobs, and two very different vacancies
Key takeaway: The method stays the same. You only change which proof you put in the five lines.
Academic or research CV. The personal statement is still short. Publications, grants, and teaching load belong in their own headings. Do not turn the opener into an abstract of your thesis. A hiring committee will skip to papers anyway; Workday still needs contact and dates on appointments.
First job or new graduate. Lead with the placement, clinic, or project that used the same tools as the advert. “Coursework:” dumps are weak. “Built a 4-page intake form in Google Apps Script used by a 6-person clinic” is a line you can preview in the statement. Pair with resume with no experience and student resume.
Two target fields. Keep two files and two statements. LinkedIn can be broader; the Workday upload cannot. The version you submit should not make the recruiter guess which person you are this week.
Returning after a gap. One plain clause is enough: caregiving, redundancy, full-time study, visa wait. Then the proof from the last relevant role. A skills-only statement makes the hole look larger. See employment gap resume.
What to do next today: pick one advert, run the 12 steps, then score the file. If the checker flags a missing email or a heading Workday will not map, fix that before you rewrite another adjective. The Enhance CV home page is the shortest path back to the builder and the checker.
FAQ
How long should a CV personal statement be?
About five lines, or roughly 50–80 words, aimed at one vacancy. If you need a second paragraph, you are repeating bullets that belong under the first job. UK two-page CVs still start short so the panel reaches experience on page one.
Is a personal statement the same as a US resume summary?
Same job, different label. Both should state title, setting, and one proof point. UK CVs often say Personal statement or Personal profile; US resumes say Summary. Do not paste a UCAS-style essay into either. See resume summary for the US-shaped version.
Should the personal statement go in a header so it looks designed?
No. Workday and Greenhouse often miss text in headers, footers, and text boxes. Put name and contact in the body, then the five lines, then a Skills heading. Design is optional; a stored email is not.
Do I still need a Skills section if the statement lists tools?
Yes. Parsers map a Skills heading more reliably than a prose clause. Repeat the nouns you can defend as a simple list. Keyword stuffing the statement with every essential criterion will not replace that heading in Taleo or Workday.
Can I use the same personal statement for every job?
You can keep a master paragraph in a notes file. The version you upload should name this vacancy’s title and setting. Two very different targets need two statements. A generic opener is why Greenhouse search never surfaces you for the nouns in the advert.
Should a career changer use an objective instead?
One sentence of pivot is enough inside a statement: last domain, transferable proof, target role. A full “seeking a role where I can grow” objective wastes the first screen. Comparison and examples: resume objective vs summary.
What if the employer uses Workday and still asks for a covering letter?
Keep the statement short on the CV and put the extra persuasion in the letter or the Workday text field. Do not duplicate a 300-word letter in the CV header. After you upload, read every autofilled field — parse errors are common. See how to upload a resume to Workday.
How do I check the statement did not break ATS parsing?
Select-all in the PDF. If contact does not highlight, fix layout first. Then run the Enhance CV ATS checker against the advert for contact, dates, headings, and keyword gaps. Fix those, then apply. Do not wait for a silent Workday rejection to learn the email was in the header.
Draft the five lines in a layout parsers already map
Open the Enhance CV builder, keep your facts, and write the personal statement after the experience block. Then score the file against the vacancy.
