Education on a resume: one heading, real dates, no icon diplomas
Use one Education heading, real school names, degree names, and dates a parser can sort. Put education first only when the degree is the main qualification. Drop GPA unless you are early career and it helps. Workday maps this block; icons and tables often drop the year.

Key takeaways
- · One heading — Education or Education & Certifications — so Workday and Greenhouse hang school, degree, and year on the right fields.
- · Degree, school, location optional, month/year or year. “In progress” with an expected date beats a mysterious empty year.
- · GPA only when you are early career and the number helps this posting. Skip high school once a degree is done, unless the job asks.
- · Licenses and certs that the ad names belong in text, not as logo rows. Put RN, PMP, CPA where a human will see them on a phone.
- · Export selectable text, then check the parse so the graduation year still exists after Workday extracts the file.
Put Education first only when the degree is the qualification
Key takeaway: New grads lead with school. Everyone else leads with work. The heading stays the same; only the order on the page changes.
A recruiter opening Greenhouse wants the proof that matches the requisition. If that proof is a BSN and an NCLEX date, Education can sit under the summary. If that proof is five years of NetSuite close, Education belongs under Experience. Workday still maps both blocks. Humans read top to bottom on a phone. Do not make them scroll past coursework to find the job they came for.
Students and career switchers into licensed fields are the usual exceptions. Teaching, nursing, accounting, and some federal series treat the credential as the gate. Then list Education high, and still give Workday a real Experience or Clinical/Projects block underneath. A degree-only page with no dates on work looks unfinished, not academic.
Do not split Education into “University” and “Life learning” with icons. iCIMS will not map a lightbulb. One heading. Reverse chronology: highest or most recent credential first. A bootcamp after a bachelor’s can sit under the degree if the posting names the bootcamp stack; it should not replace the degree line unless you never finished the degree — in which case say so.
For the rest of the page order, how to write a resume and what to put on a resume stay the inventory. This page is the Education block only. Experience has its own rules in how to list experience.
What one Education line must contain
- Degree name as the school writes it, or a widely understood equivalent (B.S. Biology, not “science stuff”).
- Institution name, city/country if it disambiguates (there are many Springfields).
- Year, or start–end, or Expected Month Year for in-progress work.
- Honors, GPA, thesis, or relevant coursework only if they help this posting.
If you attended three schools and finished one degree, list the degree and the school that conferred it. Transfer credits do not need their own row unless the posting asks for every institution (some federal forms do — that goes on the form, not necessarily on the one-page PDF).
What Workday and Greenhouse actually map from Education
Key takeaway: They want school, degree, and dates as text. Diploma icons, skill bars for “Excel 90%,” and nested tables are how the year vanishes.
Workday’s education fields are picky in some tenants: school name, degree type, field of study, start, end. If your PDF says “Uni of X ’19” in a sidebar, the extract may store the school and drop the year, or store the year as a skill. Greenhouse search will still hit “Biology” if it sits in a normal line. It will not hit a vector diploma graphic.
Use a heading the ATS already knows: Education, Education and Training, or Education & Certifications. “My learning journey” is cute and unmapped. Put certifications that are not degrees either under that combined heading or under a separate Certifications heading — still text. CPR, PMP, AWS, state licenses: name, issuer, date or expiry if the posting cares. Do not use a logo row; Taleo often reads logos as empty.
Dates: “May 2022” or “2018 – 2022” or “Expected May 2027.” Avoid “Class of ’22” as the only date. Avoid “to present” on a degree you finished. If you left without a degree, “2019 – 2021, 60 credits toward B.S. Mechanical Engineering” is clearer than hiding the years. Recruiters prefer an explained incomplete to a hole.
GPA: include when you are early career and it is strong for this field, or when the posting asks. Skip it after a few years of relevant work, or when it does not help. Do not put GPA in a graphic meter. Do not list every course from freshman year. Two or three relevant courses beat a transcript dump — see student resume.
File habits that keep the year
- Single column. Tables for the whole Education section shuffle school and date.
- Same system font as the rest of the file. Script school names look “official” and parse as junk — resume fonts.
- .docx or selectable PDF. A scan of a diploma is not an Education block.
- After upload, read Workday’s Education fields. If they are blank, the PDF never handed them over. Fix the file, do not only retype the form and forget the attachment.
International degrees: write the original name and a short equivalent in parentheses if the US posting will not recognize it. “Licenciatura en Administración (equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s in business).” Do not invent a U.S. degree you were not awarded. Evaluations (WES etc.) belong as a line if the employer asked for one, not as a fake diploma.
Rewrite weak Education lines: three before-and-after transforms
Key takeaway: Course dumps, missing years, and icon diplomas are the usual misses. The after lines still fit on a phone.
Steal the pattern. Do not invent honors. If you have no GPA, do not add one. After Education is clean, the work still has to prove the posting — resume bullet points.
Before
University of Somewhere, various classes in business and leadership. GPA: see transcript. Diploma icon in the margin.
After
B.S. Business Administration, University of Somewhere, May 2024. Relevant: managerial accounting, Excel for finance.
Before
MBA expected soon. Harvard (online-ish). Dean’s list every semester (unverified).
After
M.B.A. in progress, State University online program, expected Dec 2026. B.A. History, State University, 2018.
Before
High school, college, bootcamp, Coursera, YouTube, all in one cloud of logos.
After
B.A. Psychology, City College, 2023. Google Data Analytics Certificate, 2025. (High school omitted; degree complete.)
Bootcamps and certificates: list them when the posting names the stack. Put them after the degree, not instead of it. “12-week data bootcamp, 2025 — SQL, Tableau (no degree)” is honest for a switcher. Pretending a bootcamp is a B.S. is not. Career changers: career change resume.
Teachers: certification and grade band belong in text near Education or in a Certifications heading. “State teaching license, Elementary, expires 2028” is a line Workday can keep. A scan of the certificate as a header image is not. See teacher resume.
A 12-step playbook to rebuild the Education block
Key takeaway: Do this after you know which posting you are targeting. A master file can hold every credential; the upload should not.
Twenty-five minutes. Have unofficial transcripts or LinkedIn only to copy facts, not to paste the whole timeline. In the Enhance CV builder, type Education as body lines, not as a designed table.
- List every credential on a scratch page: degrees, licenses, certs, bootcamps, with real dates.
- Delete anything that does not help this posting and is not needed for a background check story.
- Order remaining items reverse chronology (or degree first if it is the gate for this job).
- Write each as Degree, School, Date. Add city if two schools share a name.
- Mark in-progress items with Expected Month Year. Do not leave a blank year.
- Add GPA only if early career and the number helps. Otherwise delete it from the upload file.
- Add two or three relevant courses only for students or tight switches. No freshman dump.
- Move licenses the posting names into this block or a Certifications heading — as text.
- Remove high school if a degree is complete, unless the job or a local custom still wants it.
- Strip tables, icons, and text boxes. One column, system font.
- Export selectable text. Confirm you can highlight the year.
- Paste into the ATS checker with the job ad. If school or year is missing, fix layout before you apply in Workday or Greenhouse.
Step 2 is the one people skip. They keep every MOOC “to look hungry.” Hungry looks like a cloud of logos. Hungry that gets a screen looks like one certificate the posting named plus proof in a project bullet.
If Education is still longer than Experience and you have eight years of relevant work, you ordered the page wrong. Cut courses. Move certs to one line. Put the work first.
Education choices that parse versus choices that drop the year
Key takeaway: If the choice is not in the table: will Workday store a school and a date, and will a human still understand it at 7 a.m.?
Use this while you edit the block. Design templates love diploma icons. Parsers do not.
Education decisions that survive Workday versus ones that lose the date
| Topic | Do | Don’t |
|---|---|---|
| Heading | Education, or Education & Certifications. | “My journey,” lightbulb icons, or no heading. |
| Order | New grad / licensed gate: Education high. Experienced: below work. | School first on a 15-year file because a template said so. |
| Dates | Month Year, year range, or Expected Month Year. | Class of ’22 as the only date, or a blank year on an unfinished degree. |
| GPA | Early career and it helps, or the posting asks. | A meter, or a 2.1 on a mid-career ops resume. |
| High school | If it is your highest completed credential, or the job asks. | Once a degree is conferred, unless local custom or the form requires it. |
| Layout | Plain lines, one column, selectable text. | Nested tables, logo rows, scans of diplomas as the whole section. |
Study abroad: a line under the degree is enough (“Semester, University of X, Spring 2023”). It does not need its own heading. Honors societies: one line if the field cares, not a bullet for every club. Clubs that prove work belong closer to Experience or a thin Activities line on a student file.
Edge cases: unfinished degrees, licenses, bootcamps, and older workers
Key takeaway: The heading stays Education. You only change how you label dates and which extra lines survive.
Unfinished degree. Dates plus “credits toward” or “left to work.” Do not list it as awarded. If you later finished elsewhere, the conferring school is the degree line; the first school is optional.
Expired license. If the posting requires a current one, do not list it as active. “RN license, inactive 2024–2025, reinstatement in progress” is rare but honest. For nursing detail, nursing resume.
PhD or ABD. “Ph.D. in progress, expected 2027” or “Ph.D. candidate, all but dissertation, 2020–present.” Academic CVs can run longer; the Workday job file still needs a short Education block plus a parseable Experience or Research block. See how to write a CV.
Older professionals. Graduation year can trigger age bias in some markets. The honest approach is still a year if the parser wants it; some people drop years on degrees older than 15 years and keep the school. Know that Workday may then store Education without an end date. Do not lie about the decade.
Military training: if it is the qualification, list it like a school (institution, course, year). If it is extra, one line under Certifications. Translate acronyms once.
What to do today: pick one posting, run the 12 steps, export selectable text, check the parse. If the year is missing, kill the table before you rewrite a course name. The Enhance CV home page returns you to the builder and the checker.
FAQ
How do you list education on a resume?
One Education heading, then degree, school, and a date a parser can sort — month and year, a range, or Expected plus a date for in-progress work. Reverse chronology. Put the block first only when the degree is the main gate. Keep it as selectable text so Workday and Greenhouse can map school and year.
Should education or experience go first?
Experience first once you have relevant work the posting cares about. Education first for students, new grads, and licensed fields where the credential is the gate. Workday maps both; humans read the top of the phone screen. Do not hide a strong job under three pages of coursework.
Do you put GPA on a resume?
Only when you are early career and the number helps this posting, or the employer asked. Skip graphic meters. Skip GPA on a mid-career file unless a federal or academic form requires it. A 3.9 in a relevant major can stay; a middling GPA usually should not.
Should high school be on a resume?
Yes if it is your highest completed credential, or if a local job or form still asks. No once a degree is conferred, for most US ATS files. Some countries keep it longer on a CV; even then, one line, real dates, no icon.
How do you show a degree in progress?
Degree name, school, and Expected Month Year. You can add “in progress” in plain text. Do not list it as awarded. If you paused, use the years you attended and a short “credits toward” note instead of a fake conferral.
Where do certifications go — with Education or separate?
Either under Education & Certifications or a separate Certifications heading. Both parse if they are text. Put the certs the posting names where a human will see them without scrolling past hobbies. Logos are not a heading Workday maps.
Can Workday read education in a table or two columns?
Sometimes, often in the wrong order. Nested tables and sidebars are a common reason the year lands in Skills or vanishes. A single column of plain lines is the reliable choice. Check the tenant preview after upload, not only the pretty PDF.
Should you list every school you attended?
List the school that conferred the degree you are using, plus others only if they help this posting or a form requires a full history. Transfer credits rarely need their own row on a one-page resume. Federal applications are the usual exception — follow that form.
Put Education in a layout parsers already know
Open the Enhance CV builder, type degree, school, and year as body text, and keep icons off the diploma line. Then score the file against the posting.
